Bolton School finds out Whether the Weather will be Good Today

Bolton School pupils are taking an active interest in recording the weather, such as taking temperature recordings, measuring wind speeds and rainfall amounts.

Today, we have taken part in the Guinness World record attempt at the largest interactive weather report. Here at Bolton School, we are lucky in the fact that we have a complete weather station mounted on the Arts Centre roof.  This provides an insight into what goes on around us on a day to day, month to month and year to year basis. The station is looked after by the head grounds-man and is regularly monitored. As of the start of the year the Geography department has been getting more actively involved. I went for a chat with Mr. Jackson, a geography teacher, to find out more.

Mr. Jackson was very positive that boys are getting involved with the weather station, as it determines everyday decisions and it is a skill to see what changes around us on a regular basis. When asked if the staff showed an interest in the weather recording he again gave positive feedback saying, “Staff often ask me for the temperature and rainfall results for the month.”

The Geography department have never been in connection with a weather station before, but for a first attempt the recording and tracking of the results has been very successful.

The year 8’s are aware of the station as they do ‘The weather’ as a topic, but he says no other area of school pupils has been targeted, though the Geography department are trying to set up cross curricular links with ICT, so people can try their hand in some graph making using Microsoft Excel.

Though tracking the weather is fun, we could do with some sunshine hours to report!
